Time Magazine’s sucky cover.
15 May 2012 Leave a Comment

Time magazine has caused a tsunami on the parental values debate. Mum’s are picking sides and passing judgement on their sisters. Do we really need fuel for the fire?
AND NOW for my 2 cents worth.
I think there are 2 major things wrong with this cover and both elements rub me the wrong way.
#1 The layout of the photo.
If Jamie Lynne were sitting on a lounge chair in her own home holding her 3 year old son in both arms and looking lovingly down at him, people would see the ‘attachment’ part of attachment parenting. The love and the beauty that is apparent in this parenting method.
There are a good portion of Mothers who find breast feeding difficult, if not totally impossible. The fact this woman has managed to be able to nurse her son for this long should be applauded.
On the other hand we shouldn’t be guilt tripping women for whom this is not even close to their reality. Which brings us to the second thing I find wrong with this cover.
#2 The headline.
Mothers are finding it hard enough to make their children’s lives as rich as they can without having a world renown magazine telling them they don’t measure up.
“Are you Mum enough.” HOW DARE THEY!
Drawing a line in the sand not only divides the masses, but triggers remorse and regret for women who may feel like they really don’t measure up. This is stupid and takes us backwards not forwards in the struggle for parental support from the community.
For all our bitching and carrying on, there is one positive thing to come from this awful cover…
We’re ALL talking about it.

April at a Glance

April was a month of so many moments I hope to remember right into my senile years. (Oh hush, I’m not there yet)
Vision was forced to make a quick change of venue due to some maintenance work on the room we’re usually in. Thank the powers that be for the Brisbane Square Library for allowing me to bend the rules a little and allowing us to crash there. It was wonderful to have as many people turn up that did on such short notice.
I attended the wedding of the last kid I used to baby-sit. The sisters and both families did an amazing job working together to make the day magical. I loved every minute and was proud to loan them the kiddo to stand up there with them to make the day feel like it had come full circle.

Bless their hearts. May their married lives be prosperous and filled with happiness and joy.
Kiddo was picked to participate in an advanced creative writing program through the school. The Author who’s mentoring the kids this time around is Deborah Abela. Her book Grimsdon is on the readers cup list for this year and the kiddo managed to get through the last half of the book in a couple of days. She just wishes she didn’t have to wait another 6 weeks or so to get into it.
I’ve been keeping up with the reading, and found that not every book written about Australia makes me want to cringe.
Another 6 books under my belt brings the count for the year so far at 35.
No tutorials this month but there should be at least 1 next month.
The weather has been beautiful and showers cleared when they should.

May will have Hubby’s birthday, Mother’s day, vision back in it’s usual place and more review books.
5 Months into the year and so far it has been great.
Bring on winter!!!
March at a glance

March was packed full of stuff for each member of my family.
We had a great turn out for the Vision Writers meeting. The submitted stories were amazing.
Hubby went to Melbourne for the F1 GP.
Here are a couple of pics he took.

Then there was the Kiddo going on camp on the same day. Apparently $185 doesn’t buy them hot showers. *roll my eyes*
After they both got home and we were back into a routine I stepped out on my own for the Evanescance concert on the 26th. (yes a Monday night gig… weird)
Tuesday of the same week we had parent teacher interviews to get a progress report on the kiddo’s achievement levels in school. She’s doing enough to make me very happy.
Friday she found out she had been selected for the school’s Readers Cup team. I’m just so proud.
Then also on Friday the 30th I went in for an Australian Society of Authors Event… I managed to miss the showers that had washed the city clean, but got these beautiful pictures when walking to and from the Northern banks of the river.

My average word count for the month is 120 words per day, and the year so far word count is at an average of 114 words per day.
I read 11 books this month and the count for the year so far sits at 29 books out of the goal of 80.
Hubby bought me 4 books whilst in Melbourne, one of which is an Omnibus of 4 Amelia Atwater-Rhodes stories.
Review books come before my personal TBR pile and April is looking to be a big month for brilliant reviews.
Can not wait!
February at a glance

My word count minus the story writing is sitting at about 89 words per day for the months of January and February. Falling a little behind, but a new blog series starting this month is on the boil for Burn Bright and some over due book reviews will help bring it back up.
I have read 4 books this past month bringing the total so far this year to 18, only 62 to go over 10 months.
I managed to push the tutorial number to 5 for the year so there are only 8 to go to reach the goal.
Hubby and I have been married 8 years and together for 12 as of February.
Together with the help of friends and family I managed to raise $136 for Ovarian Cancer Australia on the 25th of February.
The Vision Writers meeting had 5 submissions and 2 newcomers among the 8 of us that attended.
Friday Ketchup is back on the air and we’re now on podomatic so you have 6 weeks to go back and listen to the last few weeks worth of shows.

March is due to be equally amazing!

I read an interesting article by The Guardian this morning and I guess to begin with I had better link to it so you can hop over and give it a browse before I add my two cents.
YA novel readers with publishing establishment
I agree with the closing thoughts
“Whose book is it anyway? The hardest thing a writer has to learn is that once you publish a book, it’s no longer truly yours – even though it’s got your name on the front and it lives inside you. It belongs to the readers now. All you can do is steel yourself as you push it out into the world, stay gracious, and get busy with the next one.
And if you can’t stand the heat of the blogosphere – don’t Google yourself.”
Now onto my view of this as a reviewer…
I am lucky enough to be one of several consistent reviewers for www.burnbright.com.au . We also do a monthly book club which gives our readers multiple points of view on the one book. I guess Bloggers and reviewers who aren’t lucky enough to have a team helping with the content either end up having to put lousy reviews on their sites, or risk having no content.
Marianne has a no bad review policy, which we all follow. Basically, if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
Since getting to know Marianne a little over the years; I have learned how difficult it can be to get a book noticed. There are, after all, thousands published in Australia alone, so how are you going to get people to pick up yours, when the shelves are packed?
There is the argument of publishers being so stretched they can’t create the massive hype for every book they will put on the shelves, hence the need for review copies. Your friends, family, and the publicity team do their damnedest to get your book noticed, but having people read your books and using word of mouth is one of the most powerful tools you will have at your disposal.
How people react to the review copies is entirely up to the individual reviewer. Followers of reviewers are generally following them because they have found similarities between the reviewer’s point of view and their own experiences.
Now with all that in the back of your mind, have you ever seen a book that EVERYONE loved? No. The old adage ‘you can’t please everyone’ is true. Bad reviews are a fact of life for anyone putting a product out there. Whether it is a book or a brand of perfume, there will always be people who oppose what you believe to be brilliant.
The only thing you can control is how YOU react to their opinion. Starting a public stand off resulting in pissing off reviewers is not helping anyone.
I’ll leave you with my uncle’s quote, which I agree with and it applies here.
“Opinions are like assholes; everyone’s got one.”

It’s that time of the year again when I make my resolutions. Some I think I will carry over from last year and some I’ll amp up a little, and add a few new ones.
~ I want to read 80 books this year. 12 of which to be Aussie. Reviewing as many as possible.
~ I want to do at least 12 video blogs/ reviews or tutorials this year.
~ I want to be the best president I can be for the Vision Writers group.
~ I want to find a part time paid job.
~ I want to aim for $500 for my fundraising for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Australia this year.
~ I want to get my creative memories program back up and running so I can resume making pretty digital scrap booking pictures.
~ I want to be in print again this year.
~ A 100 word a day base level again. (between blogs, reviews, or story writing)
~ I want to be more social.
~Again trying to keep the housework under control.
Achievable goals.
Ones that can be met by working harder and trying my best.
Lets have at it shall we.
First book of 2012 to be finished is Pale Demon by Kim Harrison. Love the Hallows series but this book is by far a stand out effort.
I’m now on Wildcat Fireflies by Amber Kizer, the sequel to Meridian. Book 1 sucked me in just from the excerpt on Amber’s website. Book two has been on my most anticipated list since 2010. Can not wait to get stuck into it for hours.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.
Here’s an excerpt:
A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 2,000 times in 2011. If it were a cable car, it would take about 33 trips to carry that many people.
